Communication In Nepal
 

After the coming of modern technology, Nepal observed much more improved communication system. Postal system has been already introduced and was in use by the Nepalese Government since the past few decades. There are numerous privately owned/operated courier services too at present times. Communication centers also have opened up adequately in most parts of the country providing local or international telephone services. They also provide fax-machines and other latest communication machines/equipment for better communication globally. The latest fad is the mobile technology which has made communication very easy and swift. Besides, internet service has added to the list also with countless such cyber-cafes operating in the Kathmandu City as well as in most urban areas throughout the country.

Postal Services: General post office in Nepal, located near ‘Dharahara’ Tower, opens from Mondays to Thursdays between 10:00 AM till 5:00 PM, and on Friday s closes at 3:00 PM. It offers services like registration and insurance of mail & packages as well as Express Mail Service (EMS). Foreign Post Office handles larger parcels. Kathmandu airport also has a postal counter.

Telephone Services: Nepal telephone service is good with abundant communication centers providing international call & fax services. Though, long-distance calls can be quite expensive, much cheaper internet phones are available throughout Kathmandu or Pokhara. While making a call into Nepal from other countries, the country-code is 977 & the area-code for Kathmandu is 1. You can bring along your mobile phone and once you arrive in Nepal your sim-card can be changed, the mobile is up in use immediately.

Internet Services: Internet service in Nepal has grown rapidly with the cost also coming down dramatically. The numbers of cyber-cafes have also multiplied inside the Kathmandu Valley and across the country. Most prominent tourist locations like ‘Thamel’ have countless cyber-cafes. Village/rural areas have less access to internet facility, but if you come around little town area, it will be no surprise to find a cyber-café. The rent fee is also very nominal.

Media: In just a short span of time, Nepalese media has taken a huge leap ahead. Government audio & television networks are ‘Radio Nepal’ & ‘Nepal Television’ respectively. Nevertheless, numerous FM radio stations as well as local television stations are ruling the airwaves. In print-media, major daily newspapers are ‘Gorkhapartra’ & ‘Kantipur’ in Nepali language whereas the English dailies are ‘Rising Nepal’, ‘Kathmandu Post’, ‘Himalayan Times’. Quite a good collection of other newspaper & magazines are also published.

Electricity: Electricity is accessible in the majority of towns. The voltage available is 220 Volts/50 Cycles.
Sockets have either three round pins or two thick round pins. While traveling, carrying an international converter kit & a set of adapter plugs come handy. Alternatively, carrying battery-operated appliances will be more sensible while traveling.
